The MLVP is ideally situated for viewing mystery light phenomena. Mitchell Flat, home of these mysterious nocturnal illuminations, is located directly south of the roadside view park built by the state. Much of this ground used to be covered by a large Army airfield during WWII that was used for training bomber pilots. The many hangers and Army buildings have long since been demolished and are now represented only by concrete foundations. Remains of the adobe entrance walls to the Army airfield are located just east of the Marfa Lights Park.
The MLVP provides ample paved parking space with drive-through arrangements convenient for travelers with large recreation vehicles or trailers as backing can usually be avoided. In 2003 the view park was significantly expanded by Texas Department of Transportation to include a view shelter and platform, rest rooms, and informational plaques connected by park trails. Credit for having proposed the expansion goes to Marfa High School students and their teachers. Land for the project was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Williams. A map of the park grounds and pictures are provided below.
